about
During a nightmarish stopover in a dungeon-like "hotel" in Paris, I was awoken after three hours sleep to catch my flight. My "wake up call" was of a barrage of thunderous knocks on the metal door, and when I opened my eyes I found myself in complete and utter darkness. In my exhausted and disorientated state, I groped for the light switch, but totally failed to find it. After flailing around for a while in the pitch black, I gave up and simply tried to remember where I was and how I got there, but I found I wasn't really sure. All I knew was that I had left my home, I was wondering, I was lost, afraid and alone. At last, I realized, I understood a tiny piece of what it means to be in exile.
lyrics
I wake up to a knock on my door
The place in my dreams - “I've been here before”
Shatters
All that remains
Is lost and afraid in a maze with no name
This maze of darkness so thick I can feel it encroaching
I reach for the switch to the light
I start groping
Flailing my hands
But I soon understand
No switches exist that can light up this land
The darkness is just hard but it's just a facade
This darkness is just hard but it's just a facade
Every fragment craves connection
Every death is resurrection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each breath is redemption
The darkness is just hard but it's just a facade
A mask that reminds us who we are
When our hearts are open
Freed by the urgent emotions
Fear, wonder accompany discovery
The land of my ancestors pulled out from under me
Paradigm unrecognizably utterly shifted
I tried to resist it
Once I was gifted a gift so explicitly pure
Universally sought and translated
Every language and people related
Entire religions constructed their edifice
While the foundation
Stared from the precipice of exile
Destruction of homeland and certainty
Now we all wonder alone
In a burning sea of darkness
So thick we forgot what we lost
Our eyes acclimatize
But our souls know the cost
Every fragment craves connection
Every death is resurrection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each breath is redemption
My hand gropes for the switch
But where is it?
No mere electricity
Circuits and physics alone
Could never replace to be home
Breathing
Free and connected
Roots in the core of the earth
Light reflected and limitless
States of existence so infinite
Language dissolves in attempting to imprison them
Listen
Every fragment craves connection
Every death is resurrection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each breath is redemption
Every fragment craves connection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each death is resurrection
Each breath is redemption
Listen intently
Maybe detecting an echo
Our ears will relearn what our soul can't forget so we practice
