Just a few weeks ago

We were so divided

So polarized into tribes

We were blinded

Tragically

Sometimes it takes a calamity

To shake us from faking to who we are naturally

Our malady was seeing through

Selective reality

It takes crazy pain

To remember our sanity

When our people’s incomplete

I cried when I saw us beaten and broken

How could this happen?

The hope of my nation seemed so defeated

Little did I know what we just couldn’t see yet

That strength I saw at the hospital

You looked at me with love in your heart

Maybe all the pain we went through back in Egypt

And all of the hope that we learn when we leave it

Gives us a strength that I’ve never seen in anyone

Somehow the agony we feel doesn’t bury us

If anything it gives us a mysterious

Deep inner power to transform the hideous

Pain of the atrocity became our generosity

Like long lost lovers now recovering our constancy

Hundreds of thousands flew home unstoppably

Didn’t even wait to be called, the velocity

Was shocking me, these heroes had no heed for authority

A profound groundswell, now masses responsibly

Mass mobilized to provide what was necessary

To comfort our mourners and to stop our enemies

Food, equipment, love, weaponry

Millions of boxes sent voluntarily

Evacuees kept streaming steadily

While thousands of us demonstrated our pedigree

Giving, fighting, packing, driving

Supporting each other through tears we were crying

Regardless of politics or religiosity

Our people has risen to this moment historically

May we never need reminding the truth so horribly

Our strength is our unity so make that the policy
